My beautiful Tewahedo Orthodox sister, one of the most spiritually dangerous places to remain is almost there.
Almost obedient.
Almost surrendered.
Almost committed.
Almost willing to follow God’s will.
But partial obedience is still disobedience.
Sometimes we convince ourselves that doing part of what God asks is enough. Yet God does not desire only the parts of our lives that are easy to surrender. He calls us to obey even when it is difficult, uncomfortable, or different from what we wanted.
King Saul learned this painful lesson. God gave him a clear command, but Saul obeyed only the parts he chose and then tried to justify what he had done. His actions may have appeared faithful, but God saw what he had left undone.
“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.”
1 Samuel 15:22, NKJV
My sister, we can attend the Divine Liturgy, sing Mezmur, fast, serve, and give generously, but these acts should never become substitutes for obedience. Our outward practices must be joined with repentance, humility, and a sincere desire to follow Christ.
Perhaps God is calling you to end a relationship that is drawing you away from Him, forgive someone who hurt you, release a habit that weakens your spiritual life, return to prayer and confession, or seek guidance from your spiritual father. Do not obey only the parts that feel comfortable while holding tightly to what God is asking you to surrender.
Do not build your spiritual life around almost.
Pray for the grace to say, “Lord, if this is Your will, help me to obey. Even when it is difficult. Even when I do not understand. Even when it costs me something.”
Take the next faithful step. Release what must be released. Finish what God has placed before you. Return fully to Christ with a humble and repentant heart.
God is not calling you to halfway surrender. He is calling you to a life of faithful obedience. And when you fall short, do not lose hope. Repent, rise again, and continue walking with Him.
