The Sin of Lying

A priest told his congregation, “Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17.”

The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the priest asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up.

The priest smiled and said, “Mark only has sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.”

Don’t be dismayed by those who lie and don’t be shocked to find people in the church who do lie. As of I’ve told you before, not everyone that goes to church is godly. If they are not following Christ then obviously they are following Satan’s ways and Satan is the source of dishonesty. He used lying to prompt the first sin (Genesis 3:4). Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ said that those who lie are “of” the Devil, the father of lies (John 8:44). Sadly, liars are deceiving themselves because they think they are gaining an advantage, when they are really hurting themselves by sinning.

Lying is a sin, no matter how much or to whom. Whether it’s for something good or bad. A little white lie or a big fat lie, it’s still a lie and it’s always a sin. Sometimes people lie about things just because they want to please their loved ones, it still is equally bad. Don’t frame things just because you want to please them or want something. As a Tewahedo Orthodox Girl, always be truthful and upfront and always remember a lier can’t keep lying forever. What is true will always come out some day.

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
But those who deal truthfully are His delight.
Proverbs 12:22  (NKJV)
