When Only Hope Remained

Four candles were burning slowly.

I am Peace – said the first candle, but in our times, people cannot keep me. And the flame of Peace slowly began to extinguish until it disappeared completely.

The second murmured:

I am Faith, but people no longer want to hear about me, they do not seek me and do not need me. And its flame also ceased to burn.

The third declared:

I am Love, and I don’t have enough strength to continue burning. People ignore me and do not understand how important I am. They don’t even love their closest ones. And without waiting any longer, Love went out.

Suddenly, a child entered the room and saw that three of the candles had gone out.

Why aren’t you burning? – the child asked. You were supposed to burn to the end.

Then the fourth candle spoke gently to the child:

Don’t be afraid, I am Hope. As long as I burn, you can always light the other three candles again.

With eyes shining, the child took the Candle of Hope and lit the other three candles.

My beautiful Tewahedo Orthodox sister, when peace feels distant, when faith grows quiet, and when love becomes weary, let your hope remain, because Christ remains. Our hope is not rooted in this changing world, but in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who conquered darkness and death. As you hold firmly to hope, the light of Christ restores peace to troubled hearts, strengthens faith in weary souls, and renews love where it has grown cold.

Our hope should always be anchored in God, resting securely in His unchanging promises and unfailing faithfulness. The same God who called Lazarus out of the tomb, who brings life where there seems to be none, and who turns despair into restoration is holding you today. His mercy is new every morning, and His promises never fail. When everything around you feels uncertain, let your hope in God remain firm, steadfast, and unshakable.

And never give up hope!

“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil.”
