The Quiet Heroes in Our Lives

My beautiful Tewahedo Orthodox sister, our parents are often the silent heroes of our story. Many times, they set aside their own dreams so we can chase ours. They carry heavy burdens we may never fully see, protecting us from struggles and pushing us toward every good opportunity. And yet, it’s so easy for their love and sacrifices to become the “normal” we forget to notice.

God instructs us, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). Gratitude not only honors our parents, it transforms us. It softens our hearts, strengthens our relationships, and shapes our lives to reflect the love and humility of Christ.

If you are blessed to have your parents still guiding your path, pause today and show them love. It doesn’t have to be big. A simple “thank you,” a prayer for their health, or even a gentle hug can mean so much. These small acts speak louder than we think, honoring the quiet sacrifices that have carried us this far.

Let us cherish our parents while we still have the blessing of their presence. Time passes quickly, but love spoken and shown leaves an eternal mark. When we honor our father and mother, it is not only an act of love, it is obedience to God, and it carries His promise of blessing. “Honor your father and your mother… that your days may be long” (Exodus 20:12). Every “thank you,” every prayer, every embrace becomes a way of saying: I see you, I honor you, I love you. And God delights in that kind of love.

And when our days pass, may we rest in the quiet peace of knowing that we loved our parents well, honored them faithfully, and fulfilled God’s command with gratitude, humility, and grace.

May God bless our obedience and guide our hearts always.
